Should You Take CBD on a Plane?
With recreational marijuana becoming legal in eight states, many people are wondering if they can travel with CBD on a plane or across borders. Complicating this issue is the TSA, which has issued vague rules about what is permissible and what isn’t. The root cause of all this confusion is the legal status of oils and extracts.
Many CBD users have debilitating conditions that don’t make travel by plane easy, but their work or lifestyle requires them to be always on the go. Every consumer will have their own reasons for carrying CBD on a plane; some just want to travel with their supply of CBD without having to refill on the way home, others want to use CBD as a remedy for several conditions that they may be suffering from especially on a plane, like anxiety!
Before getting inside a plane, you should do your research to make sure you don’t get in trouble with authorities. Since every state has its own laws, you should only treat this article as a precursor to your research.
CBD Legalities Different by States & Countries
CBD oil, for example, has certain products that are legal everywhere. This raises an important question— can you bring CBD oil on planes without raising alarming bells?
Traveling with CBD doesn’t have to be a worrisome experience as long as the product you are carrying is in accordance with TSA CBD oil requirements. Despite being an active cannabinoid in the cannabis plant, you can cross many state lines with CBD in your possession. But you should always exercise caution.
CBD is legal in most states across the United States— this does not apply to THC. THC is the psychoactive component in marijuana and is responsible for the euphoric high experienced after consuming cannabis plants. THC is banned, and you should learn the rulings for each location before jetting off.
You should be careful about the amount of CBD oil you are carrying—the same general rules will apply that are normally enforced upon liquids and substances. For instance, your product should not contain any hazardous or flammable compounds, and you have to keep your liquids under a certain amount.
TSA Liquids Rule stipulates that you cannot bring more than 100 milliliters of liquid. These should be filled in a quart sized bag; anything larger gets binned. Some travelers have been known to carry small amounts of liquid in large bottles. Unfortunately, their bottles are thrown away by security personnel on screening checkpoints.
Packing Your CBD Oil for the Plane
You should pack your CBD oil product in separate plastic bags and store them somewhere easily accessible so you could take them out whenever it’s time for security checkup. If the liquids are larger than 3.4 ounces, you can always put them in your checked bag. As long as the oils are classified as safe and legal substances, you will be permitted to transport them.
There are many forms of CBD, including vapes, salves, creams, and tinctures. These substances could raise alarm if they are carried on board. You can, however, carry CBD capsules that are in solid condition. Best practice is to put in your luggage and not in carry on, unless you are 100% certain it is legal in your state. Do your research! It’s up to you whether you travel with your CBD. If you are going somewhere that you know you can purchase CBD, that may be the safer option.
